Last year, we also joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm in our local area. Literally, 5 miles down the street. It was a fabulous opportunity for us. Not only did we get organically grown, local, fresh produce for about $40/week, but we got to learn together as a family. Every Saturday morning, we'd all drive down to the farm and the kids would help pick out what we'd eat that week. While we didn't grab the onions, lettuce or tomatoes, the kids saw what they were, we could talk about colors, etc. The walk to the barn where you picked out your produce for the week also gave us the opportunity to point out what foods looked like as they grew. And it challenged me to cook with new items such as rhubarb if that was one of the items we ended up taking. There were always many choices (though of course it would depend on your farm's offerings) and we always found things we would enjoy be it fruit, vegetable, herb, etc.
