School's back in session- whatcya readin'?

I'm too tired to be clever tonight, but it's Wednesday and I should update you on my progress to get 64 books finished this year.

#38 Girl with the Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier
I enjoyed this perhaps more than I expected.  I enjoyed the innocence captured by the woman for so long.  I am interested to see the movie, but wanted to read the book first. So, that being done, I can add The Girl with the Pearl Earring to Netflix without guilt.

#39 Not My Daughter by Barbara Delinksi
Sheesh, talk about a book that really just makes your head spin as the mother of a toddler.  I loved and sort of hated this book at the same time.  The writing was excellent, I thought, and the character development well done.  I found myself just hating the whole situation but being able to understand and relate to a small part of almost every view on the story as it developed.  Definitely Picoult-esque, it approaches a modern issue with a few different viewpoints and really leaves the reader with some heavy questions.  I liked the ending though found the relationship the main character had with her daughter's father pretty unbelievable as a whole.  Otherwise, I enjoyed it as a good read.  The narration was also extremely well done, which always helps in my mind.

#40- Stuart Little by EB White
Cute.  A classic that I somehow never read.  While hanging out "supervising" my 4 year old playing Dora the Explorer at the library, I picked it off the shelf.  I have sort of vowed to read books with my children as they go through school, especially those I haven't yet read myself.  This one was just a tad early.

#41- Atonement by Ian McEwan
I struggled to get into and through this one.  Again, a book I wanted to read before I saw the movie, the book left me doubting I even wanted to.  I just found the whole thing so drawn out to the point of pain.  Yet, the ending intrigued me.  I won't say much more in case I spoil it, but the ending was probably the best part of the whole thing for me.

What did you finish this week?  Or, if nothing, what are your kids starting to read for school?  Did they have a summer reading list?  This back to school stuff fascinates me.  We start preK for my oldest next week but it's just not quite the same yet.

  1. I'm a huge "fail" when it comes to reading this year. There are a few that I've started but not finished, and some that I finished but can't remember what they were, LOL!

I've been buying the classic stories at Target, from the $1 bin (Alice in Wonderland, Oliver Twist, Peter Pan, Huckleberry Finn, etc). Usually I give them to the older two boys to read, but the guideline says it's for ages 8+, and Ethan is 7 :) So, I gave him Peter Pan to read, then had him do an oral book report. He did REALLY well, remembered details I never thought he would.

I had the older two write a summary and answer a few questions about their books. I did this right before school started, since they had basically been away almost all summer and needed to get back into the "groove" of things.

  2. As far as the book "Atonement," I haven't read it ... but the movie is just as you described ... drawn out to the point of pain, barely every grasping what is going on, and finally the ending is truly well thought out ... it just took too long to get there :)
